s2309: (heart)

I don't talk much about other TV shows that I watch, but the latest episode of Scandal was such a game changer that I just have to share.

Olivia Pope used to wear a white hat. The biggest white hat ever. She killed it at her job and, while she had her morally corrupt moments, she was the hero I always wanted. (I mean, who's perfect all the time?)

Then she murdered someone.

In her defense, she was provoked, the man she killed had ruined her life quite thoroughly, she was suffering from PTSD. But no matter the reasons, she'd taken off her white hat once and for all.

I used to look to Liv as a sort of inspiration. Despite the scandals she was involved in and the muddy water she treaded daily, she was someone I felt comfortable looking up to. The few episodes after the murder, though, I wasn't sure what to feel about her. She'd changed so irrevocably. It wasn't a sudden change - she's been crossing over into greyer and greyer areas over the course of the five seasons of the show - but it was still somehow unexpected. Olivia may break laws, but there are lines she will never cross.

Or, I thought so.

I was freaking miserable.

And then the season 5 finale happened. She became Command. She became the ambitious monster that her father always wanted her to be. And somehow, by some unknown mechanics in my head, instead of being my worst nightmare, this is the best thing ever. Liv has all the power. She's in control. She calls the shots and takes names and slays. She's probably going to succeed at electing a(nother) president next season. They turned her from a fallen hero into an antihero and I'm completely awed at the transition but also jealous. I don't know how they pulled it off but goddamn I want to because it is brilliant.

Don't get me wrong, Scandal has bucketloads of flaws. The Fitz-Olivia-Jake love triangle has gone on for far too long, Fitz is an all-round asshole, Rowan continues to live for no discernible logical reason, Mellie kicks ass when she's on screen, but is ignored by the narrative so much, and Huck has gone from a fully fleshed out character to a walking contradiction to a pencilled-in stereotype. And this is to name only a few. But my precious show has done this one thing brilliantly and they deserve ALL THE PROPS.
