YES!! The two of you just perfectly described the whats and whys of the AUs I generally enjoy most vs. the ones that don't appeal to me (at least mos of the time). That one time I complained about a friend whose writing didn't appeal to me a lot lately, it was b/c of exactly what y'all described: they have the same names/faces as canon characters, but they're so different that they might as well just be some random people you stuck in a familiar "world" or whatever.
