I had a Google Images tab with the relevant artist's works open for inspiration while I worked on the icons. I focused on matching the mood and colouring of the paintings more than anything else. 16, in particular, was an attempt to emulate this painting by Line Osmundsen.

The crop, and vibrant colouring in #3 is wonderful. And the use of negative space and bold colours in #20 work amazingly together as well.
